The Gujarat government has announced a significant investment of INR 29,000 crore (approximately Rs 290 billion) to develop Phase 3 of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC-III). This project will help carry 16,500 MW of renewable energy, such as solar and wind, from different parts of the state to where it is needed.
The GEC-III project will connect green energy zones in Kutch, Jamnagar-Bet Dwarka, Banaskantha-Patan, and Central Gujarat. As part of the plan, the state will build:
- 3,430 km of high-capacity transmission lines linked to six 765 kV substations
- 860 km of lines connected to four 400 kV substations
- 4 static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) to make sure electricity quality stays stable
This new phase is part of a bigger mission that started with:
- GEC-I, which cost INR 1,932 crore and was made to carry 4,000 MW
- GEC-II, with a budget of INR 3,636 crore, is expected to be ready by March 2027
Apart from this, the Gujarat government is also upgrading the electricity distribution system under a central scheme. The focus will be on:
- Underground cabling
- Reducing electricity loss
- Using digital systems for better monitoring
All this is being done to ensure that people in Gujarat get cheap, reliable, and clean power in the coming years.
